Note from the arranger
Although usually credited to the poet Robert Burns (1759–1796), he did not actually write the tune. The melody most associated now with his poem (this one!) is in fact a traditional Scottish piece called “Low Down in the Broom,” and it was not until 1821—considerably after Burn’s death—that the two were paired together in a publication by Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith.
