Note from the arranger
Some versions of the song contain a verse sung from the point of view of a Black slave, whose own child had been left crying in a field as she cares for her master’s children. It is unclear as to whether these lyrics originally belonged to this lullaby, or whether they are the result of two traditional songs being conflated at some point, as an identical verse also appears in the less well-known American folk song ‘Black Sheep, Black Sheep’. However, regardless of the origins of the text, this lovely tune definitely deserves to be added to your repertoire!
