The melody of “Santa Lucia” has become widely associated with the St. Lucy’s Day celebrations (Festa di Santa Lucia) on December 13th, particularly in Scandinavian countries like Sweden. In these regions, a different set of lyrics were written for the song that focus on the theme of light overcoming darkness, which is central to the St. Lucy’s Day festival. Because St. Lucy’s Day is part of the Advent season leading up to Christmas, the song is often considered a Christmas song, especially in these cultures and when performed as part of a Christmas program.
