Meriç Dönük has arranged Turkish composer Bora Uymaz’s composition Nişabur Saz Semai (“The Stories of Sur“) for solo pedal harp. This piece is composed in Nişâbur maqam (“maqam” is the general name for “scales” in traditional Turkish music), which has a mystical and charming feel. Inspiration for the piece comes from a set of stories of the ancient city “Sur” by Turkish author Ali Aycil.

B, C-sharp, D, E, F, G and A are the determining notes which give the colour of the Nişâbur maqam. “Saz Semaî” is a significant, instrumental form in traditional Turkish Music, which emerges from one principal theme (refrain) and contrasting themes (episodes).
