Gretchen Monson’s arrangement of Charles H. Gabriel’s “His Eye Is on the Sparrow” is for one lever harp and two pedal harps. This arrangement combines elements of tone painting and classical music. “It begins simply, using Bach’s Arioso as an introduction,” says Monson. “Another Bach composition, Sheep May Safely Graze, is used as a counter melody to set a pastoral mood and imitate bird calls with triplet patterns. In contrast, the second verse begins stormily with an excerpt from Chopin’s Winter Wind Etude. A full-harp arpeggio ushers in the chorus, majestic and triumphant with large rolled chords, bass octaves, and RH arpeggiated accompaniment.”
