Note from the arranger

Herbert Hughes transcribed this beautiful and evocative tune and published it in Irish Country Songs, Vol.1 (1909). Like “My Lagan Love,” the piece is free and doesn’t easily conform to a regular time signature. The words were written from the point of view of a young man who is soon to marry the woman he loves, but she dies before their wedding day. In the final verse her spirit or ghost visits him during the night whispering “It will not be long love till our wedding day.” The soulful and mournful character of the piece in this arrangement should be performed with interpretative freedom, but without loss of momentum.
