The tune is known under a number of different names including “Bell Bottom Trousers,” “Rag Fair,” “Home Dearie, Home,” “North Country Maid,” “Northern Lasses Lamentation,” and “The Oak and the Ash.” All these seem to be variations of a similar melody. There is some chromaticism in this version and it includes a lever slide to highlight the harmonic effect of the change. The song is about a sailor who takes advantage of a young girl working in service. She becomes pregnant and is subsequently abandoned by the sailor who fathered her child.
