Note from the arranger
The earliest published version of this tune in James Johnson’s The Scottish Musical Museum, Vol.5 (1839) was used as a starting point for this arrangement. Johnson collaborated in the publication with the poet Robert Burns who wrote the lyrics in 1782. The song depicts a young woman much loved by the lads of her town. Youthful and warm in sentiment, the words are perhaps not quite as innocent as they first appear. The song is upbeat and fun, perhaps even a little bawdy.
