Note from the arranger

This piece was sourced directly from Bunting’s The Ancient Music of Ireland (1840). He writes that it is, like so many of the tunes in his collection, “Very Ancient. Author and Date Unknown.” The words describe the destruction of an old oak tree near Portmore Castle, County Antrim, that blew down in a storm. In the third section of the piece, the left hand takes over the melody line, a technique often used by Irish harpers (although their hands may have been the other way around as many harpers played the treble with the left hand and the bass with the right).
