The earliest published version of this tune appeared in James Johnson’s The Scots Musical Museum, Vol.2 (1788). Robert Burns wrote the lyrics in 1791 with the daughter of a family friend in mind. The song describes the beauty of the plants and flowers in the early morning dew. The rosebud is a metaphor for the young girl. “So thou sweet Rosebud young and gay; Shalt beauteous blaze upon the day; And bless the Parent’s evening ray; That watch’d thy early morning.” It is a lovely, gentle piece with a lilting and warm feel.
