Note from the composer

When composing Braids, I wanted the three strands that make up a braid to represent the interconnectedness of our planet and how our ecosystems depend on each other to thrive. The piece starts with a disconnect and abruptness. As the piece progresses, it gradually becomes more interconnected and ends together in unison as a braid comes together as it is being woven. This piece gives the opportunity to use some extended techniques.

Written for the 2026 HarpSparks: Composer Lab, mentored by Jack Hui Lister, Michelle Gott, and Jasmine van Schouwen. Presented at the Shaping Reciprocity Festival, co-produced by HarpSparks, Jack Hui Lister, and the Voices Dance Project in May 2026 (Ottawa, Canada).
