Originally composed around 1717 for harpsichord, “Rondeau,” subtitled “Les Barricades Mystérieuses,” is one of the most celebrated and enigmatic works of the French Baroque period. The meaning of its poetic title has been debated for centuries, with theories ranging from references to theatrical subjects to the intricate “barriers” created by the work’s interwoven musical lines. Built upon a flowing tapestry of broken chords and graceful ornamentation characteristic of the French style brisé, the piece possesses an almost hypnotic serenity. These textures translate exceptionally well to the harp, whose natural resonance beautifully enhances the work’s flowing arpeggiation and transparent counterpoint.
