Monika Markovich has arranged Gabriel Pierné’s “Chanson d’Autrefois” for pedal harp and violin. It is the fifth piece from Pierné’s Album pour mes petits amis, Op. 14, originally composed for piano in 1887 and later orchestrated by the composer for string quartet. “The work evokes a gentle sense of nostalgia, its graceful melody highlighting the natural interplay between the violin and harp,” says Markovich.

About the composer

Although less widely known today, Gabriel Pierné (1863–1937) was a leading figure in French musical life at the turn of the 20th century. He was active as a conductor, performer, and composer. His output spans almost every major genre, from opera and ballet to orchestral, chamber, and solo instrumental music. French in spirit, he favored character pieces and orchestral poems over large symphonic forms, writing music distinguished by clarity, elegance, and craftsmanship. A pupil of César Franck, Pierné combined his teacher’s emotional depth and harmonic richness with a refined, post-Romantic language touched by impressionism, while remaining firmly rooted in classical tradition.
