Notes from the arranger

“Sheep Under the Snow” is a slow Manx air from the 18th century. The song tells of a farmer who has lost his sheep in the snow. When he finds them frozen to death, he dies of sorrow. “The Ploughboy” is a late 18th century air composed by William Shield (1748-1829). It was composed for Thomas O’Keeffe’s comic opera, The Farmer (1787). “The Ploughman” was the most popular tune from the opera.
