While living at home (with 4 other people) I’d practice until 2am some nights, and I never received any complaints. In fact, I was often told that it helped people sleep. I guess Im lucky to have a ‘harp friendly family.’ However, as unbelievable as it may seem, I know for a fact that there are some people in this world who are bothered by harp playing I know somebody who has had issues with neighbours. Personally I’d keep an eye on them because clearly they are of the devil. How else can you explain it? ;-)

When you own your own home maybe it would be helpful to set a room/section of the house aside for your harp – far from where your husband spends his ‘down time.’

Don’t worry Becky, for me one very special thing about the harp is that, even when it’s played by a beginner, even when you just practice the simplest thing, even if you’re wrong, and even if someone who can’t play it at all tries it, it still sounds good. It’s not like beginning the violin, you’ll see. Then, if for any reason you can’t play at home, a good thing about a small portable harp (like the one you’re getting, I’m also thinking of getting it) is that you can always go somewhere else with it…Some friend’s place, under a tree…And the harp volume is not SO loud, I mean it’s not a drum…I always lived into an apartament, I still do, and so far I never had any problem with my neightbors because of the harp.
    Good luck

    Hallo,
thanks for the note Bernhard, yes you’re right, I know the Ravenna 26 is about 6,5 kg according to my harp dealer
(though any site I check has a slightly different opinion). Anyway,
Audrey, I don’t have a way with numbers at all, so if I had to convert
from kg to enything else on the spot, I know I’d be very wrong, so
    don’t worry 🙂

    Hi guys,

being new I don’t have the slightest idea what you’re talking about…But I’m not your John Doe (or Ronald McDonald ither, Mimi), so for good or for bad I’m just Micky which is how everyone calls me, and D is the initial of my surname, I don’t think that’s a strange nick…You know one really wierd thing? I don’t remember how I stumbled across this subject and found my name in it…Anyway for me is 10.30 am, so better get some more coffee…

    Happy Jhonny hunting everyone 🙂

I gave up violin because the people I live with complained about my practising. I also play the classical guitar but it’s too soft to bother anyone. I’m gonna switch to harp in the hope that it will be louder than the guitar and yet soothing to my own frazzled nerves.

As for my neighbours, they like to blast their stereo. I have no compunctions about blasting back!

Andy, that was a good one. 🙂

Kay, I hope you’re right. It makes sense to me. For whatever reason he’s expecting not to like the sound of a harp (I know, I don’t get it either), but maybe he’ll warm up to it once he finally hears it in person. He likes classical guitar, especially LAGQ, and to me it sounds very similar to harp because of the nylon strings.

Anyway, I think he’ll come around, and then he can convert anyone else who has their doubts about harp music. 🙂

Haha, well I understand where you’re coming from. We’re actually pretty much newlyweds (it’ll be one year next month) and still getting used to all the changes that happen when you have to share your life with someone else, but I’m sure we’ll work out all the little kinks with some time and patience.

As far as the noise-cancelling earphones, my hubby already has those fancy etymotic ones, which I believe are noise-cancelling, so maybe that would be the best compromise.

I’ll still probably wait to get a harp until after we move just to make the move less complicated (and since it’s reasonably close to the date I was going to get a harp anyway). I’ll also probably rent-to-own or at least go to the closest dealer (about two hours from here) to test one.

Thanks for all the advice! The more I think about it, the more it seems like it’s more my husband than the neighbors. Our condo just isn’t big enough for me to play a harp anywhere without bothering him, but once we have a house, that should change.

Jerusha, it’s like you said–my husband just can’t concentrate with noise, and he’s working most of the time, whether at the office or at home. As easy as it is for me to get in a huff about wanting to have my own way, I do have to respect his feelings and I’m sure we will come to a mutual agreement.

All of your suggestions were great and are much appreciated!! If worse comes to worse, I could always go with the felt idea or the noise-cancelling earphones when need be. I’m sure I would be happy just to have a harp!

Oh and I forgot to say Brook, yes, I’ve seen a couple of Minerva’s with no gold. One had restrained silver hightlights just on the middle section of the column. And

    Hello all –

how big a role do you think the finish plays, especially the darker ones?

Yes, it is all style and sensibilities. I don’t think anything wrong with a guy playing a “frilly” harp, the harp may look frilly but that does not mean he does! And vice versa, all those drop dead glam photos of the Angelaires playing Salzedo models! Those gals still looked glamorous and gorgeous, even though the harps are
