MemberCollege is very expensive. I did not work in a harp center in those first four years, but as a waitress, for the three in-between summers, at a resort in the Adirondack mountains, where my conservatory professor was

MemberI just watched/listened to Elena Khagba play the Grandjany Aria in Classic Style with a small chamber orchestra and organ. The accompainment really drowned her beautiful arpeggio section completely out. If only the conductor had perhaps gone to the back ( of the ancient church) to hear how the balance was, perhaps then he would have realized the soloist needed to be heard! The recording I have of Taka Kling performing this (on a vinyl LP) with the Louisville Kentucky Symphony is still the best performance I have ever heard. I wish

MemberIf you are in Idaho and wish to sell your lever harp, the Salvi Egan, I suggest getting in touch with http://www.reigningharps.com, the folk harp web site of the Puget Sound area in Washington State. Many lever harp players and owners are in this area, and there is a monthly online newsletter. When you have browsed in the parts of this site you will see a list of teachers and performers, with contact information.

MemberThe first Sunday in March is when many Welsh people in the U.S. celebrate Saint David’s Day, patron Saint of Wales. If you are in a city like mine, there may be a Welsh women’s group, a Welsh Chorus, and so on. If you go to one of these events, with a little notebook, you’ll surely be able to write down titles of beloved Welsh songs. “Land of My Fathers” (Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau) would be an important one to be able to play. This and many other melodies with words are in the book: Favorite Welsh and English Hymns and Melodies, This is published by The National Gymanfa Ganu Association of the United States and Canada. Lighter music is in “A Choice Collection of Fifty-one Welsh Airs adapted for the Harp, Piano. Harpsichord, Violin, or Flute by Edward Jones. This is available from Adlais(music printing company)

MemberIf you feel you need discipline, and easily become frustrated when at your harp. perhaps if you took a break after a half-hour, and listened to a recording of a harpist playing the same genre that you are in (classical, folk, sacred, popular, whatever) while you had a cup of a stumulating beverage (for me, it’s tea) and nibbled on some dark chocolate (they say this is nutritious for us) it may make you want to go back to your harp. Slowly but surely work out the rough spots that bothered you, while learning all you can about the harmony of those spots such as chord symbols and progressions. With more knowledge of what is on the page, the inspiration of the harp recording,

MemberAt home, in between weekly lessons, a parent needs music “games” to help reinforce the music lessons, for a 5-year-old. For instance, there are computer-based sites such as http://www.musictheory.net (free, and interactive) that have very basic music reading skills in notation, etc. Also Rhythmaticity which features a metronome beat and a yellow smiley face moving along above the notes on the monitor, and points to be won by tapping the space bar on the keyboard, exactly with the beat. Without a computer a child can learn to walk with certain rhythms (such as Step, Step, Stand for quarter, quarter, half-note, then run-run-run-run for eighth notes).

Hannah, Years ago a Lyon and Healy President (Danish, but I forget his name)came to my large city and gave a talk about the company, He mentioned that when American harps were first being built, other countries had been using green, purple and other colors and Lyon and Healy decided that we would set our own standard for string colors : the red, white, and blue of our flag. So that seems why you see red for the C’s, blue or black for the F’s, and clear or white for the rest. It has nothing to do with any U.S. president, past or present. So that girl who asked you the question was
