Hi Kay~
Things are wonderful…thanks for asking! I just joined the Cincinnati Harpers Robin and have a performance in June at one of the local libraries. It’s a group of 7-12 harpists and we play mainly Celtic music. More fun than a barrel of monkeys! Attending BITM was a real confidence booster. And I learned alot that I apply to my playing. Can’t wait for the next one!
I should be clearer. I tune the harp in E-flat (open position). But I check the tuning when I move the levers to C major. I don’t really re-tune, but I may tweak them. I’ll follow Barbara’s advice and learn how to adjust Camac levers.
Thanks to all for the feedback.

holly-kembleParticipantHi Elizabeth~
I hate to be pessimistic, but in my opinion your friend could only expect to get nearly 75% of
holly-kembleParticipantThanks for the feedback. I am remembering to do this and I am sure it will help.
Now, I tune first in E flat, and then flip the levers and tune again in C. I have Camac levers which I really like, and so don’t notice much change in pitch after flipping.
Thanks again!
holly-kembleParticipantGreat! See you there.
holly-kembleParticipantWhen I was in Junior High, I sang with a children’s chorus that occasionally performed with the Chicago Symphony. For our Christmas program one year, we performed Britten’s ‘A Ceremony of Carols’ and Lynne Turner from the CSO brought her big, beautiful harp out to Glen Ellyn to play with us.
For those of you who are unfamilliar with this piece, it was originally written for Soprano I, Soprano II, and Alto, and is accompanied only by harp.
I thought it was the most beautiful instrument I had ever seen or heard!
I had already studied piano for several years and had just started viola lessons so I could play in the school orchestra. Unfortunately, the harp was not offered. And I thought
holly-kembleParticipantHi Pat~
I’m glad you are going and that I get to meet you and your harp. Are you taking your McFall?
I enjoyed your blog. I confess I’ve never read ’12th century music’ and ‘jamming’ in the same sentence!
Can’t wait! Kay….I wish you were going, too.
Thanks….Holly
holly-kembleParticipantDoes anyone remember the New Yorker cartoon about the Internet? In the frame, two dogs are talking to each other (this is a New Yorker cartoon after all!). One dog is sitting at a desk in front of a computer and says: “On the Internet, they don’t know you’re a dog!”
I’m not convinced that the post asking for money to buy a Venus Encore was really going to be used for purchasing a harp. Maybe that makes me cynical, but I prefer giving money to people I know or to causes that I can confirm.
holly-kembleParticipantThis is an interesting subject. I agrere with Ann…serious musicians always strive to acheive a very high performance level.
But in my opinion, we define ‘perfect’ more as no mistakes and less as a high level of musicianship. I have been to many concerts where the pieces were executed flawlessly….but left me feeling unsatisfied.
Conversly, I have attended several performances where I noticed a few mis-steps, but the performer(s) were so passionate and

holly-kembleParticipantThanks for all the feedback. I’ll probably start a ‘just in case’ pedal harp savings fund…but I think I will continue to work on my lever harp materials.
As always…..I appreciate all the feedback!

holly-kembleParticipantHi Kay~
I would *love* to practice 3 – 4 hours a day…but alas…..there are not enough hours in the day.
When I do practice, I lose track of time. I can spend an hour on one Salzedo exercise without realizing that so much time has gone by. And I am very motivated to practice to the point where I can play ‘hands together’ on new pieces. THEN once the piece is coming along….I enjoy making the phrasing just right….and there goes another hour.
Sometimes when I’m stuck in traffic on I-75, I’ll move my fingers along to the tune in my head. I wonder what the other drivers think!
I wish I had taken harp lessons years ago instead of piano lessons. But then I though the harp was only for rich Gold Coast musicians. Live and learn.
I hope that your harp continues to give you such joy. It sure enriches ones life!

holly-kembleParticipantHi Carl~
I am 50, and have been taking lessons since last June. I used to be employed as a public school music teacher, with piano and vocals as my focus.
I stumbled into William Rees’ Harps on Main by accident and fell in love with their 36 string lever harp. I hope to get good enough to play for weddings
