This reminds me of the 23 that used to be listed on this website. Someone said that a gilded 23 had been stolen. How do you steal a harp? We all know they are not small. So the people most likely to know how, where, and why to steal a harp would be harpists themselves–and yet, a harpist ought to know that things like serial numbers are so easy to check, especially in the relatively small harp community. It is just so odd. Stealing a harp. My goodness.

Coincedently, I have never seen an ebony prelude.

I hope that Ms. Davis finds her harp unharmed and in a timely manner. Hopefully she is insured….

My teacher keeps several lever harps to rent out, and we live about 4 1/2 hours away from the Atlanta Harp Center, which I believe also rents out. Also our local Harp Society chapter does, I think, have two pedal harps that are available to be rented, which I think is wonderful.

Good luck to your prospective student!!

I was discussing the harp with a nice, but non-musical lady the other day, and after a while she asked me, “Do you play well?” I was a little taken aback–but I just said, “Um, yes”, and moved on. Maybe that was a bit vain–I’m not the best but I’m certainly not bad–anyway I thought the whole thing a bit odd and rather funny.

I’m sorry, Carl, but I really don’t agree with you, here. I felt the question was quite innocently posed–and was quite valid. I have had similar questions and wonderings, and as Venus (and Swanson harps!) are the only two harpmakers that I’m interested in but haven’t yet played, I am very interested every time someone brings them up.

When you enter the harp world, every one has their own opinions. Living in “Lyon and Healy country”, I didn’t realize that there were other options for a while. I assumed they were the only clear choice. And if harpists can’t ask questions here, in an anonymous, educated, and helpful enviroment, then where can they turn?

Someday I hope I will be able to try out a Venus harp and decide for myself–but people must understand, that “flying out to Chicago” is not an option for everybody. And unfortunately, if they way Venus handled themselves on this post is any indication of how they do business, I don’t think I’m in any hurry. Is customer relations really such a lost art?

The Venus harps really do look lovely (I haven’t had the oppurtunity to listen to one, as I live in Lyon and Healy country) but lately I have been quite taken by the Swanson Harps. They look good, weigh less, and cost less.

Anyone know more about them? I love ‘La Scoula’.

Glad I could help! I do love that song–I’ll never forget my first teacher just easily pulling that song of the strings of her harp, like it was effortless–that is my goal. To spin a song so seamless from strings and wood, so that it resides in memory forever.

    Cheers to you, to!

    Hey, Janna,

I dance (Irish Dance) and I’m actually pretty good. I’ve been dancing as long as playing the harp, though I have been taking lessons longer for dancing. If you’re familiar with ID, then I’m Novice/Prizewinner.

The cool thing with Irish dance comptitions is they have live music, as well as music competitions, and I definitely think that has helped me to become a better musician.

With both dancing and music, I play by ear a lot. With hard shoe dances, if I remember what the rhythm sounds like, then I can dance it. If I remember how my teacher played the grace notes,

I find small hair clips clipped at a corner or edge of a page is very helpful, for all those time when quick pages are a must and memorization isn’t practical.

    Good luck with it all!

Or how about the ultimate “Test of Patience”. Carry on a conversation with three prospective customers at once while playing (what the heck!) Pachelbel’s Canon in D. Points deducted for ignoring questions, answering incorrectly, bodily injury to prospective clients or….excessive swearing!

Love it! How about instead of gold medals, you get gilded harps?

    What a laugh…thanks! Fairy

Quite right! Sorry, didn’t even think about that! I say column, now, instead of the mechanisms up, though, becuase a) my family tends to freak out a bit with the harp and b) they can’t see the mechanisms because of the cover. So ‘column behind driver’ is easier for us all!

So let me rephrase my post: figure out where the column goes in relation to the driver. Memorize that, and let that be your mantra!

    Thanks, Rod!
