My covers always wear out in the same spot–the top front where the sharp wires can sometimes poke into fabric. I think the whole sections where the tuning pins are should be double reinforced!
I bought a piano arrangement off of musicnotes.com and enjoy playing it.
I hope to see David’s arrangement published sometime! I heard a harp quartet at UIUC play an arrangement once and it was fabulous.
I know a harpist who doesn’t do any of the vegetable chopping in her house–she has her husband do it all. Not all of us have that option, so I try to be super careful in the kitchen. I also wear gloves when I garden or do cleaning. Did you ever see the video of the hand model? It is kind of crazy–talk about being protective of your hands:
The link in the above thread doesn’t work anymore. Does anyone know if it is possible to purchase transcriptions of her music? I have a request for Sprout and Bean. It doesn’t sound hard, but I don’t have time to transcribe it myself!
I think that it is part of their art season and they sell season tickets for it, so I don’t know if there is an option of not charging for tickets. When I have played recitals in the past it has always been for free–you can’t really put a price on the countless hours spent practicing. It is very different than just playing background music at a dinner. That is a good idea to check with the union.

Susann McDonald has a new technique book and it does a great job updating the vernacular. It relies on the Renie book, but it is much more approachable. It is great for teaching teenagers and adults. The Harp Olympics series by Wood/McDonald are fabulous for kids. I love these books because they are slow paced which is really good for young kids especially. They also have three sections, theory, exercises, and solo pieces. This really helps structure the lesson so that you don’t neglect the essentials.
You could take a Suzuki workshop to really get pedagogy instruction, but I am not a big fan of the suzuki books, at least in the beginning.
I think becoming a good teacher takes a LOT of experience with different ages, different levels and different levels of commitment. I minored in pedagogy in my Masters performance degree, and while those classes were useful, I find that actually doing it is the best teacher.
I recently played a Christmas concert and a friend posted a video of me playing Susann McDonald’s arrangement of Greensleeves. It was exactly 2 minutes long, but I am sure on a different night it might be more or less. You can’t play the exact same tempo every time.
I also had terrible weather once for a midnight mass gig. I will never to a winter job for that church again because they were the ONLY church in town that did not cancel their service. It is just not worth the risk. I don’t understand why they still do the service when it is so dangerous for people to come.
But I don’t think anyone can top your Bengal tiger gig!
I agree that $57 is a ridiculous fee, but I don’t think that you will ever see free shipping from these companies. They just don’t have the volume that places like zappos and amazon do. I sure miss my days of living in Bloomington and just browsing through music or pick up some new strings from Vanderbilt!
Wow, thank you for all the fabulous ideas! I think this could turn into a very nice program. It was great to see the link of the archive at BYU! I didn’t realize how many pieces they have archived.
And by La Source I am thinking of the one by Zabel, Hasselmans , and Vers La Source by Tournier, and I guess Little Fountain could be included too.
I also did UP for a recessional and thought it was a great piece for a wedding. My arrangement wasn’t that great though, so I hope you publish yours David!
Have you tried talking to her? In all of the communities I have lived in, I have made an effort to get to know other harpists and have a friendly relationship and we usually talk about pricing to be sure we don’t undercut each other. I actually just raised my rates a bit because I found out another harpist was charging a bit more and I want to keep things the same.
