Diane already beat me, posting the list that I always send to directors. I know the local middle school has done Ashokan Farewell with the harp playing the piano part. A lot of middle school/HS arrangements have a piano part that you could play on the harp. However it is sometimes frustrating — I have played a piano part for an arrangement of Westside story and of course it would be so much better to just play from the original harp part because the piano part is so awkward but the originals don’t really work in the arrangements.

I have played this piece by Gabriel Verdalle called Invocation. It is very nice and not too difficult.

I haven’t heard this piece. Sounds wonderful. What else are you playing on the recital?

I would think the Disney stuff would have harp. johns williams stuff always has nice harp parts. I would think if they do mostly pop that you would have plenty of stuff, even if it is just glissandos!

I was about to chime in with the same information Kim! The chart in that article is definitely the most comprehensive I have seen. It is still quite current as well. I think even in a few years when the prices may be outdated it still would be useful to see side by side sizes and brands of harps and range of price.

Thank you for the tip! I did find the part on sheet music plus. I didn’t even know they had parts available for download. I can try that and hopefully I can get it to open for me. At least I can see the first page and see that it is very sight readable, so that is a relief.

I love Milonga for loving by Alfredo Rolando Ortiz https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Avo6-aHnFVA

It is not too difficult because of the repetition.

I have a harp caddy. It is a three wheeled one and it goes up the stairs great. I can go up 9 steps on my own, though I would hate to be doing it every time i moved the harp. I have no problems turning and it doesn’t seem heavier then the 2 wheeled ones. I much prefer the handles on mine.

I read through a duo by Marie-Martin Marin and I liked it very much. It is composed by a harpist and works well except for one tricky passage. It was at the music library, so not sure where it would be available. Also Rossini Andante con variazioni is nice.

I have a harp caddy too and I love it. I have used some 6 wheeled dolley that were hard to manuever but the harp caddy is great. I also like the handles that come out on the side much more than the traditional style that has no handles. It works well on stairs but I would not want to do 46 stairs. That is insane. I would definitely try to see if you can try one out.

The theme music from the Pixar movie “Up” is one of my favorites and a lot of couples choose it. the marriage portrayed in the film is very sweet so it is very appropriate thematically.

Sarah, thank you so much for the detailed response! I really appreciate it. This will be at the fair in Kansas City. I am playing at a friend’s wedding. I don’t know if they have a harpist that plays there regularly. But I am really enjoying exploring this repertoire. Maybe I will be able to play a few more weddings there in the future! Thanks for your help.

Thank you for these great suggestions! Do you have any favorite collections of music? I have read through Deborah Friou’s book and I found some nice appropriate stuff in Kim Robertson’s book. I agree that Greensleeves is a little weird at a wedding. Is there a comparable website like Irish’s music thesession.org for renaissance music, where I could find these tunes?

How did the performance go? It sounds like quite a challenge but was it really cool in the end? I know the harpist for Wicked has the whole part scanned into an ipad. I wonder if something like that would make the page turns easier? I think switching between harps would be a little silly–not that big a difference in sound and impossible to fit in some pits anyway!
