ParticipantI’m glad that you are safely out; so relieved to hear that. Please keep us informed, as much as you can, as your journey to safety and peace continues. The good wishes and prayers of many go with you.

ParticipantIt’s very startling to have a string break right in your face, and normal to feel a little “flinchy” for a while afterward. But it’s not a frequent occurrence. I think over time you’ll relax and not think and worry about it so much. Good-quality strings should not break when you bring them up to pitch; they’re made for that pitch and shouldn’t be stressed to the breaking point by the tuning process.

ParticipantDear Basel,
I hope that by now you have been in touch with Carl’s niece. I am praying that you will make your way to a safer place, where I am sure you will find loving support as you get established in a new and different life. You have made many friends here, and I believe I can speak for many of us when I say that we appreciate your kindness, your humanity, your ability to be lovingly concerned for others even in the midst of the horrors you have been forced to endure. Though you feel isolated, the friendship, love and prayers of many are with you every moment, every day. I cannot improve upon what Emma said, above. I can only echo it. You are appreciated and loved. Godspeed, dear Basel.eliza-morrison
ParticipantCheck with your insurance company for their policy on this. Mine sends letters periodically warning not to leave instruments in cars. The implication is that there may not be coverage if something happens, though they don’t explicitly say that.
In a private, secure garage, in moderate temperatures, I think I’d be okay with it. Make sure it’s lying in such a way that there’s no stress on any part of the instrument.
My son had a valuable instrument stolen from his locked car, so I would never leave it in a car, even briefly, in any public place.eliza-morrison
ParticipantThanks for your efforts, Emma! Wow, the 17 is really beautiful. And 47 strings!

ParticipantHow about Ann Hobson Pilot? I think she would be great to interview (and read about).

ParticipantEmma and Sherj, I contacted Natalie at L&H about the re-issued 17. They have built three of them; one is on its way to the festival, the other two are for sale, each priced at $35,000. The finish is bubinga with bronze. So beautiful! Much too much of a splurge for me however.

ParticipantMia, harps certainly aren’t cheap, but I think we all have a secret “if money were no object…” harp fantasy! I love the 11, especially the soundboard art. Emma and Sherj, I did not know L&H was making commemorative 17s! That is exciting news, and the walnut and bronze, with 47 strings, is indeed a dream harp. I love the 17 and was so sad when it was discontinued. I found it to be one of their most beautiful designs.

ParticipantThat would look incredible. I’d love to see it!
In the meantime, I think the ebony and bronze 23 is stunning, Sid. The ebony Style 11 is very elegant, too.eliza-morrison
ParticipantI agree with Kay…please post pictures!

ParticipantThat’s a rough approximation….because of the exchange rate. Maybe that’s why so few US harpists buy them.

ParticipantHi Jerusha….I have never heard one played. I’ve heard another Thurau model, the Bauhaus. Both are way beyond my means. I believe the Javelot is close to $100,000 in US dollars. The Nouveau, though less than half that price, is still just a dream.
I’m enjoying looking up the harps that people are posting about!

ParticipantCongratulations, and may it bring her years of joy! How blessed she is to have parents who are so supportive of her dreams.

ParticipantThese are great suggestions; thanks. Bonnie, we are already doing the Saint-Saens! Looking for something else to do in the same service, in perhaps a lighter mood. Great minds think alike! Brian, I’ve never heard of the two pieces you mentioned, but will definitely check them out. I assume they’re available from the usual sources?
