Saul, I can’t read the article in the Camden Herald without subscribing. Any chance you could copy and paste it here? Thanks for letting us know about this.

The more you tune your harp, the more it will stay in tune and the better your ear will be trained to hear when it needs tuning. If it is kept all the time in a consistent environment, it may not go much out of tune and may need only a little touch up tuning. Gut strings tend to be more susceptible to changes in humidity and temperature than nylon. Wire strings are usually the most stable.

That being said, one should make the best use of one’s time. If there is only an hour to practice, decide how much time you can spend on tuning and how much on practicing. Tuning can be a relaxing process to put you in the mood for practicing. As your ear improves, you may find it annoying to practice on a harp which is out of tune (depending on the individual). Maybe just fix the strings that bother you most at any given session. Harps don’t go out of tune uniformly, so if you don’t have perfect pitch, you may not know which are right: the ones which sound sharp or the ones which sound flatter than others. If it sounds mostly in tune with itself to you, that may be sufficient for practicing.

No harp in the Peer Gynt Suite No. 1 (Morning, Ase’s Death, Anitra’s Dance, and In the Hall of the Mountain King).

Suite No. 2 is Ingrid’s Lament, Arabian Dance, Peer Gynt’s Homeward Journey, and Solveig’s Song.

Suite No. 2 has one harp.

How fun! Don’t you wish you could have seen that session?

Bernard Herrmann wrote amazingly for harp; wonder how many were required for this score? You can buy the soundtrack from Amazon but it’s very expensive. Anyone know who the harpists were on this session?

It’s not too late. Many have begun much later than you. While you are building your harp fund, do a lot of research toward different brands of harp, decide what kind of music most interests you so you can find a teacher who will address that, and learn to read music and as much as you can about music theory. That will put you ahead of the game when you get your instrument. Learn as much as you can about the world of the harp–it’s vast! You never know what information will come in handy in future.

They all make good covers but I will say one thing for the Lyon & Healy ones: they are not waterproof but they are very water-repellant. My harp (and I) were caught in a major downpour. I was soaked and the cover looked very wet, but inside it was totally dry. As long as the harp was protected, it didn’t matter that I looked like a drowned rat. When you spread the cover out over some chairs or something, it dries rather quickly.

Tony is right. One other point is that nylon in the 5th octave sounds dull and thunky, doesn’t ring like gut. A 17 is a higher end model and will sound best with better quality strings, but that’s generally true of most harps.

It’s “Son of Harpo Speaks,” because I have a copy. It’s very interesting and a nice addition to my collection of books by and about the Marx Brothers.

Believe it or not, I was finally able to figure this out! Didn’t know what computer thumbnails were. Have found it/them now. It does work to drag the other pages to Preview sidebar–never did that before, either. Now will send to iPad to see if I can make it work there as hoped. Many thanks!
