Yes, there is a functional reason…this way of soundholes you find till the 18,century with the Louis XVI harps. After this period the soundholes changed to the backside of the harp shell.
Here you touch a general question of harpmaking that is the influence of the sound hole size.
I did many testing and measurements of frequencies in relation to the soundhole size.
There are two different kind of sound projection from a harp body.
The first is the air vibration inside the harpshell andYes I agree with you I found often the bass range of the small harps a little dull and string tension become lighter at that bass range.
So, a lap harp can have wrapped strings especially at the bass range where the string length become relativelyMy wife is harpist and she was at the Northsee to stay for a week fore concerts. The place she stayed was about 10 miles from the water. After she comes home we hatd to replace all the gut strings becouse one after the other was breaking.
It is the salt of the ocean what break the string.

because the string loose ther sound little by little…it is hard to hear the difference to when they where new. By the way do new strings also needWell, normal questions I would say.
Harp strings are made to stay at a certain pitch. It is not a good idea to tune the harp to diverent keys.
It depends to the harp…but harps can stay very well in tune.

this is an easy question to answer.
Since we all know that there are good and bad sounding harps we allready know the answerIt is years ago, when I decided not to take part in discussions over the use of carbon in harp building. But sometimes one should examine its decisions. So, here I���m right in the middle of this thread.
First let me say that I���m very surprised and frightened about those publicly statement of customer information. I can understand from one view the emotional situation of Mr. Krasicki but I think it is not a good way to make such customer information public���.for what reason ever. There should have been a shorter way to clarify.
Now, to come back to the original posting.

If this is what one wants to play for what reasons ever������there is nothing on earth saying it���s wrong. It is just a wish of one customer (ore more).
On the other side there are industrial Manufactures calculating.
What I want to say, if there are enough harpists with the need of Carbon harps the manufacturer will do that. And no one will be able to change this. At least not by blaming or dislike such harps.
Each person with the wish to have such a Carbon harp can not be forced to go an other route just because one thinks the other route is the right one.
Or even better, it is impossible to discuss things like sound. This is only possible at a very, very secured environment where each person is really taken very seriously.The most important question for me is whether one may steal the experience of others.
