As someone organizing master classes, and seeing a failure of students to sign up for the AHS student recital, I feel I must remind teachers that their students must always have at all times at least two pieces that are performable. Memorized or from music, fully learned and musical, and music that is worth listening to, not something for pedagogical purposes only.

There are lots of pieces in our repertoire that serve both purposes, without even looking at music composed by harpists.

Do you think it might be because they are so overwhelmed by the amount of music they need to learn for the competition? Perhaps they are afraid to take any practice time away from that repertoire. Or are you thinking of the kids who are not already taking part in the competition?
