I’ve done a couple free concerts around town to get some practice for an audition. Now, there are two or three very nice people who rather expect that if they ask me to play, I will…for free! I love giving concerts, but moving the harp, preparing the pieces, setting up, etc., is really not worth it for just more ‘pro bono’ work. It’s not like I don’t have anything better to do. Is there a nice way to let these people down, gently?

    Would appreciate the help…!

I would say something along the lines of:

“I’m sorry, but I can only afford to donate so many performances in a given period of time.

Or, something like, “I no longer play for free, but in your special case, I’d be willing to give you a 20% discount off my regular fee of $1000.”
