There is also “demonstrable evidence” that there ARE pros who play them, and evidence that there are widely differing opinions of what sounds “good” to people.

If those are the worst sounding harps you have EVER heard, you must not have heard all there is.

I remember being at a harp recital once where a girl used a Mideastern Megan harp. After she played, some of us harpest ( 22 harpest were there. ) commented on how surprised we were at the great sound. And she didn’t play any easy piece. She did say she changed out the levers, but it had the original strings.

Also my harp teacher has a L&H Folk harp that we can’t believe how bad it sounds. I guess you just never know.

I think what some people forget in discussion where there are definite likes and dislikes of company’s and their product, is that the buyer, this case YOU, IS the person paying for it and the person that will be living with and playing the harp for most likely a LONG time.

SM…my first harp was a Mid East beginner harp that my husband purchased as a Christmas gift.

When I started haro when I was nine, I got a Mideast heather harp. After about a year of using it, things started not working, breaking etc etc.

At the time, I thought it sounded so pretty. But now, listening to the video tapes of recitals when I was nine to the, say, audition tapes of now when I’m playing my Salvi CG, there is absolutely no comparison in sound (remember, this is MY opinion).

My old mideast sounded like a shoebox with elastics around it compared to my newer harp. So, there may be some truth in when Zen said about “not having heard a real harp.” But, now that you’re just in your beggining months (you’ve only played for a little while…. right?) your mideast is perfectly fine.

My parents would have NEVER purchased me and GREAT lever harp, like say, a $5,500 dusty strings as a starting instrument, cause they would never think I would stick with it. So the $200 magazine-bound Heather harp was a great place to start for me.

Then again, there’s always the off-chance that they have serverly improved their products in the past 6 years, or that you have a rare find. Who knows. Mine was just simply nothing more then crap. But it got me off to a solid start!

John, I just read your posting about Mideast harps.

For your information, I’m hardly living in an “upscale neighborhood”.

I live in a 14×7 camper and have been building my own house for 7 years (by myself).
