Cheap pedal harps?

Katherine- really interesting to see what has happened to the
Lunacharskii factory- but I find any maker of pedal harps stating that
‘harps have a lifetime of 7 to 10 years’ rather worrying.

Yes, they do say that don’t they. Many manufacturers are trying to get a more responsive and boomy sound right from the outset. Even lever harp makers in this part of the world.

And yes, I have a problem with that. Who knows what they will actually sound like in a few years when they really do play in. I suspect muddy and

That was actual to Lunacharsky harps and that was true. Most of them were badly made. I had to repair many old Lunacharsky harps.

But Selenas are rather better and I declare their probably lifetime up to 30-50 years. The mechanic and wood are improved greatly. As much the sound. I work there as an acoustic specialist – and, of course, I choose tonewood by quality – not by price, as it was before.

I’m so glad you explained this..I myself have been confused about your harps and assumed they were the same as the “Lunacharsky” harps…not knowing what their names are before this time. I did check your website actually and they look really intriguing. The art work you do is fascinating…really dream like and unsual. Glad to have a Russian harp maker on the column! Wow!

I have been reading a lot of comments on harps regarding construction, watching YouTube videos of harp factory tours,etc. They are complex instruments, relatively expensive(not really if you think of the raw materials, length of time it takes to have the expertise to build them, the overhead of a shop,employees, insurance,etc.).
