About the composer
James Meyer (1938- ) is a distinguished clarinetist and composer. After receiving his bachelorās degree from The Julliard School and his masterās degree from Southern Illinois University, Mr. Meyer briefly joined the New Orleans Symphony Orchestra. He then joined the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra in 1966 and played clarinet there for the remainder of his career. As a composer, James Meyer was awarded two NEA grants and was commissioned to write for several orchestras, including the St. Louis Symphony. He was also composer-in-residence at the Opera Theatre of St. Louis.
āSong of the Earthā was written in 1989 by Mr. Meyer for two friends in exchange for a gong. The piece was then revised and given to violinist friend of mine, Charles. Charles and I played the piece in college, and I have been playing it ever since. This edition includes a full-score, separate parts for both players. I have added rehearsal letters to facilitate preparation. I have also suggested pedalings and a few fingerings for the harpist. Harp harmonics are played where written, sounding one octave higher.
