This is an interesting situation for me as I’m going through a similar situation with a pupil at the moment. And I’m beginning to become concerned that its too much of a mismatch between teacher and pupil.

I like him, he’s an adult beginner, a gentle soul, and has alot of musical talent, he is also smart and intelligent. But! he does not apply himself to anything that I ask him to do. Does not read my notes, does not practise the pieces or exercises I ask him to, has difficulty focusing on what I ask him in lessons, vagues off, ask unrelated questions, breaks into tunes he has learnt himself..or will jump up mid sentence while I’m trying to tell him something and start playing with the buttons on my couch (its

    Hi Micky,

This is a great question, and I often get asked it by pupils. I tend to advice them to go for the professional models, rather than the student range, if it is affordable of course. Especially, if they, like you can hear the difference.

In general, and by no means always, the more professional models have better tone, evenness, responsiveness and this in itself helps you develop as a player. As it can be hard to progress on an instrument that is holding you back. If a harp in uneven or not responsive, it can make for slower progress in gaining control. And if you love the sound of your harp, it will also inspire you to practise..which I don’t think you can underestimate.

    I also find that

    M.L.,
if you don’t mind disclosing, how much did you pay for the harp itself and how much extra for the decoration? Is the price for the harp comparable to that of a normal Camac Clio? Does it mean the parts are originally Camac?

I’m feeling really envious…wishing you much joy in your beauty…I know what flowers I would have if I have the dough to do it!

Hmmmmm…maybe the producer wanted the mysterious and distant quality???? Maybe he’d been watching game shows where you phone a friend for advice???

Nice harp parts in all of those. I did the Korngold and the Walton not so long ago but it was not recorded. I may just get

My family was a little iffy about me choosing harp, as it isn’t always convenient, but one thing they tell everyone who is interested in hearing about

Wow, those custom harps and the restored Lyon and Healys are so beautiful they make tears come to my eyes…because I can never afford it….

It’s wonderful to think about customizing soundboards using one’s favourite art….*sigh*

One of the better recordings I heard back of myself for the Nutcracker was on a tiny stage, where I was backed in against the wall – and there was a lip jutting out at that point creating

    Hi Saul,

I’ve never seen a 24…I agree that ornate work is not necessarily unmanly. I personally like the sight of a guy in smashing dinner suit with ornate harp! It looks prestigious to me.

    Anyway, as to the 23

Yes, the Russian harps are the same design – I read through the history of the Selena company and its taken over the Lunacharsky factroy. So, its the same factory taken over by different people. I like the plain model, always did like the fact that they use and unveenered board. I had a girlfriend that had one (when run by the old gang) and it had a sweet tone – a parlour size harp with little projection but sweetly voiced.

I have no idea what the new company have done, or how they are different, they have said they have changed the materials used (improved the quality). Katherine should get back on and let us know!

    Thank you.

How about the “safety loop” method recommended in the Method for the Harp?
