    Marcia,

I’m sure once you get started again you’ll get back into the flow of it! I don’t know about you, but I’ve noticed after only practicing a few times, playing the harp really lifts my mood. I can see why harp is used for therapy! I just keep realizing that even if I’m having a bad day before I start playing, once I’m done playing, I’m almost giddy and yet relaxed at the same time. Amazing! 🙂 Love at first pluck.
Well, I’ve already learned the first quarter of one of my compositions on the harp, and I can’t wait to practice more and learn the rest. I’m still very slow at it and making mistakes, but I just can’t believe I’m actually playing it. It sounds so much more beautiful than on my keyboard.

Good luck making time for your hobbies! Life is so much more fun with hobbies.

One of my very first jobs many many years ago was a very crowded cocktail party with me jammed in and people almost on top of me – a lady in a light beige dress with red and black horizontal strips came and stood with her buns about 18 inches from the strings on my right – not only that, but she moved side to side as she chatted so my strings disappeared completely and I got slightly seasick – took her a good 20 minutes to wend her way out of my visual path.

Micky, thanks for the sweet note! It is very exciting to finally be living this dream.

Well, I got my rental harp today (a gold Sharpsicle) and I love it! It has a lovely tone, and the gold paint is really very pretty. I tried holding it with just a strap and found it to be comfortable, but next time I will try it with the lap stick/knee bone thing. I was surprised at how comfortable it was to hold just with the strap though. I may not even need the knee bone after all but I guess I’ll see once I get better. Strangely enough, I found this harp more comfortable than the big Troubadour (which had an amazing sound), I guess
since it’s not so huge and the tension isn’t as high. The Sharpsicle really does
have a nice sound and I think holding it isn’t going to be as big of a problem as I worried it would!

Anyway, still taking baby steps but enjoying the process! I just love hearing the sound of a harp, even with simple melodies and exercises.

Thanks for listening to me babble! Hopefully there will be more to tell soon.

    Becky

I have to reply tto this, I went to the scottish games in Charlotte this years and sat through the harp competetion, one guy actully used one of these horrid harps fo rhis performance, he was an excelletn player but coul dnot make that think sound anywhere as lovly as a harpsycle I woul dstay away form those if you really want to play the harp they are horrid (also 2 of my class mates last year had them and they just dont sound good or eep a tune) they are just horrid!

I think its a negative view of a good share of musical society that when one has good knowledge of piano playing, then it is easier for one to start of at the harp with a faster pace.

Margaret, I am also taken with your idea of a fantasy harp with different stains for effects. I am hoping that one of the harpmakers/ restorers will hop in here to answer your question about the practicality of different stains and finishes. To my knowledge as a player, the choice of color is subjective for the most part. I have one harp that is mahagony(stain over maple), with a natural spruce soundboard. I doubt very much that the stain had little to do with the strength
