Karen, thank you so much for sharing the same thoughts that I have also been preaching! Why do people let others have complete psychological control over what they can and cannot have, or what they can and cannot do? Aren’t we all created equal? Who decides who must suffer or live without something because you have to “earn it”? This is nothing but bullying, and shame on any teacher who uses their trusted position to subjugate their students in any way. Have Lyon and Healy, Salvi, Venus, Camac, and all the rest come up with a “Suffering Quota Statement” that one must sign before they sell them an instrument? Please, people! Follow your dreams to the best your life circumstances allow you, and never let anyone put you in a box designed by their own miserable standards.
This is for Rebecca back in post 21. I read your fascinating story again and noticed the ending— I’d love to have my pizza delivered by a BMW, a Porsche, or a Jaguar! Why do we have to feel that we are deserving of a beautiful instrument? This is the USA! If you want it, go for it: for no other reason than it’s special to you and makes you think of your mother! If I was a millionaire, I’d buy it for you in a minute. Plus maybe sponsor an exorcism for that organ loft.

Judging from the other items being auctioned and the posted history of the estate on the auction website (the house was built in 1833 with only one family living in it since- look at the photo list!)- it could be possible that this family bought it new and it has been rarely played. If I lived closer to Talladega I’d go see it in a heartbeat!
Almost two years ago I switched both my L&H 15 and Apollo over to nylon in the 1st – 3rd octaves. At first I thought I liked them, and stated so on the forums here. My right thumb began to split open where the nail and the tip meet- excruciatingly painful- I couldn’t figure out what was doing it. I also could never NEVER get the strings to stay in pitch; so embarrassing during orchestral work! I switched back to gut and my thumb healed and the tuning issues went away. My advice: don’t do it.

A harpist friend of mine inherited the entire record collection of Marjorie Tyre Sykes, which included the 78 box set of the Children’s Hour. It rivals the collection of the American Harp Society. I’ve already converted several of the albums including the rarest of the rare- the recording made at the Salzedo Tribute in New York. WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! When we went to convert the Debussy it got buried in the stash!

Hannes, so great to hear your enthusiasm and excitement! Now from one self-taught harpist to another: find a teacher. As I mentioned in other posts, what has taken me years to learn and figure out may have been done so in only a fraction of that time if I had had a teacher. But… if you truly want to go it alone, I’d get the following method books: Methodo per Arpa by Grossi/Pozzoli (I know, I know — I said I didn’t like it in an old post, but I have forced myself go through it exercise by exercise and the change and ease of playing has been remarkable) and the Lariviere Exercises Op. 9. I don’t know how it would translate into Swedish, but to quote the wisest thing I ever heard: “Discipline sets you free”- learning sound technique gives you the freedom to play however you can imagine.
