MemberA small clue not yet mentioned, would be to be able to sing easy songs in numbers, which will then depict the distance from the key note (do) of the song on the printed page, not only with the vocal cords.

MemberMel, I’ve tried to paste below an image of a natural sign next to a note, from the site wikipedia. Perhaps someone can take this image, if it appears on this site, and let us know if it can be used in combination with twxt, on this site.

MemberHelen has some good points. If you already have a harp, I’d suggest a little inexpensive

MemberYes, it’s at Lyon and Healy West and also at Lyra Music in the U.S., and at Pilgrim Harps in the U.K. Be sure it’s 40 studies, Opus 318. He has a collection of 50 studies that are not the same. The edition by Oberthur is in one volume. The one edited by Hasselmans is split into two, with 20 studies in each.

MemberRachel, check out two harp kits on http://www.harpkit.com: the Voyageur 33 string, on sale now at $850., and the Smart Harp 29 string at $325. I grant that these will cost some time to put together but a 12-year-old could do this, in my opinion, with some help. The experience would be valuable to her; she would realize that this may not be her ultimate instrument but with patience and practice of her harp skills she could eventually afford a better harp. This maker has a very good reputation.

MemberA good collection of over ninety folk songs from around the world, is Mildred Dilling’s “Old Songs for New Harpists”. Useful collections for church include “The Sacred Harpist” collection by Marilyn Marzuki, and

MemberEmily,
Surely Lyon and Healy harps in Chicago, and W and W company (Venus Harps)

MemberRod, Lyon and Healy publishes Easy Fake Book for Lever Harp by Louise Trotter, easily filled out by a pedal harp player, given the good chord symbols printed in the popular selections. Another fake book I like is not popular music, but: The Classical Fake Book published by Hal Leonard Corp., $19.95,

MemberIsaac, I must ask, has your teacher requested that you try not to look at the harp strings while playing? Do you realize that when a harp soloist on a stage is performing, he or she usually does it from memory with no music stand, and the soloist looks at the strings? He or she has translated what was on the printed page, into the geography of the harp strings, and the information comes from the brain, just at the moment needed. The concept of avoiding looking at the strings is strange to me so I hope you can explain it to us.

MemberClinton is correct, because we all need to respect copyright laws. Recently I obtained permission to arrange and publish a tango composed by Carlos Gardel, who died in 1925, for violin and harp. Although his works are considered in public domain in his country, Argentina, that date does not quite qualify

MemberMarie, I find my students are often reading Harry Potter, and seeing the movies.

MemberKay, be prepared with something yummy (lemonade and home-made cookies??) for when the truck comes. The delivery person will be tired from other deliveries before yours, and you may be able to persuade him to wait while you inspect the container for damage and possibly even give a look inside. Everything will probably be perfect, but just in case, it’s wise to make sure, before he leaves. Happy harping!!
