Meredith Kohn BocekI have arthritis in my right thumb and had a carpometacarpal joint arthroplasty. It took a while to heal from the surgery, I played my Camac DHC 32 electric harp while healing since it has very light tension. I am now playing my pedal harp again. I have to pace myself, cannot practice too long, about an hour and 15 minutes. Before and after surgery I used arnica cream, it is the best and safest (no ibuprofen or aspirin in the cream). I found that braces did not work well for me. The paraffin bath and a soak in hot water with Epsom salts helps. Also, icing for a couple of minutes right after you play.
Thank you to Davis for his insight. I have had very good results with Alexander Technique. I was having serious pain in my shoulders. The Alexander Technique therapist corrected my posture and it helped me immensely. Counter strengthening is very important since we harpists do use a forward position which is also used for driving and typing on the computer.
Hi,
I have carpometacarpal (CMC) thumb arthritis. I wear a brace when I play the harp, but it is very painful especially when playing octaves. I am scheduled for the surgery, arthroplasty of the thumb which requires the splitting of a tendon and relocation of part of the tendon in reconstruction of the thumb. I am very concerned about the strength and movement of the thumb for future playing of the harp. Has anyone had this surgery or know anything about it?Thanks for this tip, I had a problem when I brought back a harp that had been repaired in Cananda, but luckily they let me go through.
I just brought my lever harp to Cananda since I wanted to practice while I was there on vacation, I brought the bill of sale from 2012, I was hoping that was enough if I was stopped. I was not stopped. Does anyone know if there are any issues with just bringing a harp over for practice, not performance?
