I know you said you don’t want custom earplugs but I have some and they’re great! They really weren’t all that expensive—maybe $75 or so–I can’t remember. They are from [Westone](http://www.westone.com/) and I got them at my doctor’s office. They are custom molded to your ear and come with different fliters so you can block out all the sound or just some of the sound. They’re very comfortable and I’ve also been able to wear them to sleep in noisy hotels or planes. Can’t resist chiming in with the answer I usually give when this topic comes up! I feel strongly that all the good techniques share more common principles than differences: high thumbs, keeping a steady hand, and closing. All good techniques emphasize those three basic concepts, as will a good teacher. That’s my opinion anyway!
Maren: Is the string breaking, or is the knot just not holding? I’m not sure any harp techs will endorse this, but sometimes I’ll do a double wrap on the higher first octave strings, if I just can’t get the knot to hold. I do the knot like normal, but just give it an extra loop or wrap around the anchor. It usually does the trick. The other thing to check is if there’s something rubbing the string at the bottom or top that would be causing it to actually break in the same place each time.
Wow, what a challenging project Donna! I’m not big on insisting piano if someone wants to learn harp, but I would think it would be extremely helpful in this case. How about a blog on your progress with this student???

I have confirmed with Skaila Kanga that she was indeed the one who played on the Les Mis soundtrack! She said the recording was done at Air studio but mixed at Abbey Road. Other recent movie soundtracks she’s played for are Skyfall, the Hobbit, Hitchcock, and Jobs. She’s working now for Dreamworks on The Croods. Busy lady!
