    There was a nice string of posts on this topic a while back–how people went about learning a piece and how they practiced. YOu might do some subject searches on this site, too for those topics.

    Hi Heide,
    I’m not sure exactly what you mean by “I am talking about not the how-to, but the what.” But it sounds like you’re on the right track with your practicing, and your subject, “What practice teaches” is especially apt. I sometimes tell my students that I am their teacher only one day a week, and the rest of the time they are their own teachers, with the hope that they will do the kind of analytical practicing that you’re doing. Keep up the good work!
