Washing Covers

Some mice got into my cover storage, so I tried washing the Ogden cover on gentle with cold water, inside out, and I don’t think it shrank at all or anything. I am a little more reluctant to try the 23 cover. Has anyone else tried this? Lyon & Healy did not recommend doing it, but didn’t offer another real solution.

Probably putting it in the bathtub with gentle soap and soaking like you would a quilt? I don’t think it would take the extraction of a large washer and my semi-grand cover would not fit in a regular washer anyway.

Yes if it has a nap (pile) or a velvety surface then it’s always a good idea to wash things inside out. Cold is quite safe, I run cold washes a lot and everything comes out clean and never runs or shrinks – the Australians always wash on cold. My old Salvi green felt cover came out fine although I’ve never washed the newer Red Salvi one.

Maybe it should be dry cleaned?
I don’t know what newer covers are made of. My LH-15 1971 cover is heavy canvas…never cleaned. Many years ago, I made a white nylon cover to put over it to protect it….but I’ve never kept it anywhere that mice live. Maybe you should invest in some cats. I have four, and I never have mice in here. I’m sure this has been lots of help to you. (:

I think it survived, perhaps not as well as the smaller cover. I had to do some hand-rubbing and rinsing after anyway. It dried surprising quickly. The outside seems to be nylon, there is foam padding, and the inside is synthetic, I am sure. If it was glued to the foam, they have separated, but it shouldn’t harm the effectiveness of it. Now I have a closed container to store it in.
