There is a Salvi Ana harp for sale in my are that is missing some strings, they have been missing for some time (2 years). Would the soundboard crack if it was restrung?
I purchased a lyon and healy harp built in 1911, no strings at all! It’s sounding board is just fine. You should be ok. Am not sure how long my harp was without strings. Go for it!
If the soundboard isn’t already cracked, adding the missing strings won’t hurt it. It was made to support the tension of a full set of strings, after all. If the harp has been missing these strings for two years, it clearly wasn’t maintained and you probably want to restring the whole thing — make sure to work that into your offering price.
Thank you for your replies, I am going to take a look at it this weekend. I’ll post some pics if I decide to purchase it. Any idea what the lifespan of a Salvi Ana is?
