    I searched the Harp Column for an answer to this question and did not find it, so please forgive me if this has been brought up before.

    I have the Grandjany edition of the Feuillets D’Album, but I think the edition doesn’t really matter.

    In the European method of notation, the eighth rest and quarter rest are mirror images of each other.

    So to answer your first question, in measures 2 and 4, they are quarter rests.

    Looks like my edition is right and I’ve been reading it wrong!

    I don’t have the music in front of me, but I do have that same edition. If the eight note rests look like backwards eight note rests, then yes, they are quarter note rests. I think that is the European way of writing them or was the way of writing them. It’s a little confusing sometimes!

    I have seen these types of rests in some orchestra parts occasionally, for example in the Danse Bacchanale from Samson and Delilah by Saint-Saëns.
