Question for those who play celtic/folk music

I’m looking to upgrade from my 19 string harp, and really like Stoney End’s Braunwen. My question is, Braunwen goes from G to G and her twin sister, briar Rose goes from F to F. Which am I more likely to need, the lower F or the higher G for playing Celtic harp music?

Congrats on getting a new harp! I like Stoney End, and think you will be happy with one. 🙂
If I were choosing for myself, I would go with the G-G. Unless you plan on playing a majority of your tunes in F, Bb, or D minor and would really want the low F, that is. I think most folk tunes will easily fit in the 4 octaves either way (F-F or G-G) but if you don’t really need that low F, the Gs will serve you better for most celtic music.

I love the low F on the Briar Rose because it rounds out the bass clef and is surprisingly included in several pieces. On the other hand, I’ve yet to encounter a piece that required the G three octaves above middle-C although I do play one that reaches that F. That my preference is playing in lower octaves may colour my choices but I can highly recommend the Stoney End model either way.

Well, I guess it’s a good thing I asked for advice! I suppose I’ll take a hard look at several pieces I’d like to play and see. But honestly, thanks for the advice, it’s made me think a little harder about my choice.

Usually it’s the lower strings that are most needed when you don’t have 2 full octaves below middle c.

I know the topic is a little old, but I have the Stoney End Briar Rose (which is the Braunwen, F to F). My teacher told me to get the F to F because I’ll need the lower notes more than I’ll need the higher ones. I’m very happy with my choice and love my harp! It comes with a beautiful rose pattern on the soundboard and I can’t tell you how many people have gasped over how pretty it is. It also sounds great! I’m now hunting for a lap harp and may get the Brittany from Stoney End, which is just a smaller version of the Braunwen.
