I found this site today, pretty extensive list of scanned music for free, check to be sure copyright is not needed for the US. Some of the scans are not great but I think they would be fine to try out a piece to see if you like it before trying to find a copy to buy. I think this site intends to try and be a site like google books only for compositions.
