I have played with a couple of these- they are quite popular in children’s science centres.

I played one at the science musuem (don’t remember the name of it) in St. Louis a few years ago. This was before I ever started playing harp, so I was really excited about it. I was a bit disappointed, though, to find that the part of the harp that should have sounded lower was the high range, and vice versa. I was flabbergasted that some clever scientist who created it could have missed such a basic concept (big end = low, small end = high). I’m sure he never saw a real harp. It was about the size of a lap harp, and was bright, bright yellow. I also couldn’t see the lasers. It would be interesting to find one again and see what I could actually play on it. It also had one button that changed the MIDI sound that came out, which made for some pretty funny-sounding glissandos…

There is nice frameless laser harp controller which can be connected to standard ILDA laser projector with high power laser, and there is no problem to see the beams any more. You can find info on: http://www.laser-harp.com.
