I just got a collections of sonatas by Krumpholtz. The first one is titled “comme scene pathetique”. Does anyone know what this means? It’s interesting that the other sonatas have no titles, except the first one.

    Thank you.

    Hi

It is French for “like a pathetic scene”. So your audience should be sobbing and wringing out their handkerchiefs after you have performed it.

Either them, or you will be. I would be if I had to play any Sonata by Krumpholtz. There’s a really odd one that has a sequence of movements, then goes through all of them in reverse order to get back to the beginning.

This piece is on the repertoire list for the International Harp Contest in Israel (2009).
