    I’ve been playing harp for a long time, but I just found out that I’ll be working away from home for several months.

    I’d just let them go. They grow back soon enough when you return to playing.

    Maybe if you were away for a week or so that might be worth it; but if I had to give it up for several months, I think I would be more concerned about keeping my songs under my fingers than maintaining my calluses.

    I’ve taken multi-year breaks from extensive playing, and have had no trouble “coming back” with callouses.
