These questions are directed at those who teach harp at university. How does your university integrate the harp students with the strings? Is the harp department included as part of the string department, or is it separate? How does the office assign chamber groups, and are they given coaches? Do the harpists play with the chamber strings, or are they expected to find their own chamber groups to fit their repertoire? How are they assigned orchestra or band parts?

Is there any way you can be your own department? One consequence is in who sits on juries and auditions. I doubt that inclusion of harp would result in greater participation. String players don’t think about us and don’t know the literature.

The harp is in the chordophone class of strings, separate from bowed strings, which are in the lyre family (which includes guitars and lutes).
