    A picture would be helpful. Also look on the metal plate on the neck where the strings wind on the pins. There is probably some engraving there with a name of the manufacturer and possibly even a serial number.

    Also, if it’s very old and has been sitting around without strings or with broken strings, it might need some structural inspection or repair to make sure it’s capable of carrying the load of new strings. Can you give us an idea of how long it’s been in the family, how long it’s been since it’s been played, etc., that would be helpful.
