I Teach Harp

I see harp sitting in living room, not doing anything, looking so nice and shiny. I thinking, I give harp lessons to make money so I can leave John Doe someday, give him taste of his own medisin. How much I need to know to give harp lessons? From what I read here, it look like I not need to know much at all, just advertise a lot, have website, pretty pictures is all. What do you think?

Hi Saul, well, I should have time to promote myself, but I’m just awful at it….I have a friend that used to play in the orchestra with me, and she is a fine player and does practise, but is absolutely amazing at promoting herself and her string quartet…It is frightening she is so good at it.

Rosemary- I’m terrible at self promotion too, but I have noticed that the people who are good at it are, above and beyond every other quality they have, persistant. They NEVER give up. I think that that’s the main reason they are successful at it. There’s no magic secret. They just keep at it relentlessly.

If I kept at it relentlessly, I’d just be pesky! It’s just not something that I’m good at – and have to admit it that I’m not relentless either. I have ideas for marketing, and then get distracted by other things more interesting to me. This pal of mine, is amazing, she is relentless, but also really really enjoys that side of it. It is almost like playing chess to her, or monopoly, it is a challenge in itself ! (She is also a very very good player). And she does very well on the wedding and function scene as a consequence. And I think for that type of work, you do

It’s interesting- I live within 40 miles of NYC and yet I had a hard enough time finding a teacher. There was one teacher who does do a lot of self-promotion but I think she deserves to promote herself. I didn’t pursue taking lessons from her because it was an annoying drive about 15 miles away from me.

My teacher never advertised anywhere, although she does have her name and phone # on one of the harp sales websites. I can’t think of which one.

When I called her, she sounded mildly surprised that I had found her. She is a wonderful meticulous teacher, I think she would be an excellent teacher for advanced students, but she is scrupulously honest and doesn’t encourage kids to switch to pedal unless she feels they will continue to play in college.
