OK, I need repertoire suggestions. We have one piece being written for this “double” ensemble but we need other pieces to fill out the program. The instruments in the other ensemble are flute, violin, clarinet and piano. Our ensemble is harp and percussion. All instruments don’t have to be involved in all pieces, so, the majority of the concert will be duos and trios. We know some flute, harp and percussion stuff. Any other ideas? Preferably more recent compositions?
One idea varies slightly from your instrumentation (by 2 musicians) and that is Crumb Madrigals. It’s a four part work, all four parts feature percussion and soprano. The first 3 parts are trios, adding in double bass, flute or harp. Part 4 is a quintet.
At the 2012 AHS conference, we heard the premiere of Cenzias y Fuego (Ashes and Fire) by Jose Miquel Bevia, written for harp and percussion.
Yes! We’ve been talking aout the madrigals for another concert for awhile. And we’re trying to avoid breaking in to our two respective ensembles (mine being harp and percussion and the other has the rest of the instruments) for this concert. Its tough. It could be duos or trios though! We’ve thought about the Tan Dun piece for piccolo, bass drum and harp. Do you know of anything newer for harp, violin and cello or harp and clarinet maybe?
Kevin Fox wrote Lily Lake Road for Lori Gemmell for the 11th World Harp Congress in Vancouver. It is for harp and steel drum, and is a really nice piece.
There is a nice suite for harp and clarinet by Paul Reade called The Victorian Kitchen Garden Suite. As for harp and percussion, you could play something Spanish (maybe Baroque Flamenco by Deborah Henson-Conant) and have the percussionist play castanets ad lib.
Harp and percussion we are fine on 🙂 If anyone wants to check it out, we have lots of pieces! http://www.duoharpverk.com Check out the works list. I’ll look up this Paul Reade piece! Thanks!
