Greetings from the Central NY chapter of the American Harp Society! Are you ready to participate in a GREAT concert event??

In 1932 the Syracuse, NY chapter of the National Association of Harpists, Inc. (a predecessor to the American Harp Society) held the 12th annual National Harp Festival in Syracuse, New York. 72 harpists led by Carlos Salzedo gave a grand concert.

In 2007, A Harmony of Harps, the local chapter of the International Society of Folk Harpers and Craftsmen, sponsored and held Harpa Galora, a re-creation of the 1932 concert and 36 harp players took the stage under the guidance of Syracuse University orchestra leader, James Tapia and played for an audience of over 200 people.

Five years later, Harpa Galora will happen again here in Syracuse and we are inviting as many harp players as will fit in the hall to participate! It is a great opportunity to play in a large group setting; the repertoire is diverse and hopefully interesting to all players; and it is just plain fun to have a lot of harps on the stage playing music together!

We believe that the hall will be able to hold as many as 50+ harp players so please feel free to send this message to any player who you think would be interested in participating. Here are the details to date:

Date and Repertoire: Harpa will take place on the weekend of August 18-19, 2012 at the Syracuse University College of Music Setnor Hall. The concert will be held on August 19th at 2P.M. The concert will consist of 12 pieces played by the entire harp ensemble and 8 pieces played by harp soloists or small groups. The music includes classical, folk and pop pieces – something for everyone! As all of the pieces are multipart pieces, players are encouraged to buy the music and divide the parts with other harp players to decrease the cost per person.

Player Criteria and Registration: If a harp player has a teacher they regularly take lessons from, that player must be recommended by the teacher to participate in Harpa. If a player does not have a teacher, the player must be able to play regularly with both hands. We realize that there is a lot of music to be learned in the repertoire so while players are encouraged to play all the pieces, they are not required to do so. In order to register to play in the concert, please contact me, Jennifer Byrne (president of the CNY chapter of the American Harp Society by email (harpy@twcny.rr.com) BEFORE THE END OF FEBRUARY.

Practice: In the months leading up to Harpa, there will be monthly practices in the Syracuse NY area of the ensemble pieces for players to attend if they are able to do so. In the month of August, there will likely be additional practices scheduled. Players who are not able to attend these practices are encouraged to set up monthly practices in their own area with other harp players. There will only be one day when the full ensemble will practice together, being August 18.

Attire: Attire for Harpa will be white tops/blouses with black dress slacks or skirts for women and white shirts and black dress slacks for men. Black jackets for men are encouraged but not required.

Misc. Details: Lunch wil be provided on the day of the full ensemble practice on a pay as you like basis.
There may be an opportunity for a harp circle or jam the night of August 18.
Proceeds from the concert will be donated to a local musical organization to be determined.

If you have any questions, please email me. See you at the Concert!!

    Jennifer
