Suzie Q
ParticipantRecently, I’ve noticed something strange up at the neck of the harp. I have a Salvi Daphne Semi-grand. Right where the neck meets the sound board (right near the very upper strings, where there is a gold band on my harp), it seems that the glue is coming out of the opening, maybe. This is a bit hard to describe, but I will try my best. Its possible that there is just some dust that mixed with the glue there, because it is a grayish color. However, there is this gray-ish putty like substance that is showing around the edges of this part of the neck…where it meets with the sound board. That is where there is a seam. I hope this is making sense…
I don’t know if the glue is weakening, or if there could just be dust that mixed with it, making it this gray color, and making it seem to come out from the seam… I just don’t want to leave it be if it could be something more serious.
If you are confused, I can try and provide more details.
Thanks!

ParticipantSuzie,
The point where the neck meets the soundboard is never glued.

ParticipantWhat would be mixing with the dust to make it like putty? I would check with the manufacturer, because maybe they added glue or made a mistake.

ParticipantThank you for your responses. If it isn’t usually glued on pedal harps, then I don’t need to be that worried about it coming apart. I just know that this grey wasn’t showing when I purchased the harp a year ago. I don’t know what could be mixing with dust. Maybe it is just oils and other liquids, but if it stays like that, I can ask my harp teacher and it is due for regulation within a year.

ParticipantI meant to add that I’m not absolutely sure it is putty-like, since it isn’t coming out completely. Its possible that it is just dust along the edges of this seam that looks to be putty.

ParticipantThere is a felt gasket between the top of the body and the kneeplate(the gold band you are talking about). The felt can be any color but is often gray. Are you sure you’re not seeing the edges of the felt gasket?

ParticipantI’m not certain about anything, but it is possible. Since it is inside this seam, its hard to see. It could be that the dust made it more noticeable, but it was always there. I am however glad that this doesn’t sound like a drastic case. I was just worried my harp could fall apart. That’s reassuring, but I may try and look into it more. Thank you all for your opinions.
