I have just moved to the NYC area and I am trying to build a studio, but I’m not sure beyond posting signs and advertising on craigslist how to spark interest in potential students.

There has been some discussion on this website (under recruiting students):

Personally I found craigslist to be good. I’m also listed on http://www.harpteachers.com, but I don’t think I’ve ever gotten students from that (I keep the web listing though so people have it as a reference).

Good suggestions. I would also contact local papers and put in an ad. In addition, you might contact your local high schools or middle schools….the music teachers…..and ask if you can post a card on their bulletin board indicating you give lessons.

Hannah, in my large city there is a slick magazine geared to young parents, and since music lessons are best started by young children, there are ads from piano teaching studios amongst the ones for birthday parties with clowns, etc. You could try that for harp.

New York is an incredibly difficult place to do it. Everyone is interested in the “money” instruments that famous people play. I never saw a city with fewer harp students per capita. There should be thousands, but there are not. It depends on what area you are in. I don’t know what works, because nothing seems to work except being in directories and having a good background. If you can figure out something to do that will get you to be well-known, at least locally, that might help. People seem to get quite stupid when they decide to look for a harp teacher, they never know where to look. It also might help if you can open some kind of harp store.
